Enjoying the upbeat music from our 18th floor balcony. TAKEN: APRIL 12th, 2025 |
Like most, upbeat music is definitely a part of who I am. As a matter a fact, any and all music is.
The trouble with live entertainment when you're on vacation, is it usually happens after you've had a day full of sun and snorkeling; so being in a crowd of a couple of hundred people when I am tired isn't at the top of my list.
Vacation or not, I should clarify that my travel buddy hubby and I are both morning people. Actually, when on vacation, we give each other an hour of grace. By 7am we are on our second cup of coffee and by 8am we are dressed and on the move.
So, by nightfall when the nightly entertainment gets started, I am ready to shower away the sand and sunscreen, and get begin to get ready for bed.
It wasn't like that last fall in the Mexico, but then again we were stuck in the middle of a tropical storm, so water activities through the day were limited - leaving energy for night time fun.
I guess you can say that this trip, we were given the best of both.
Amazing twelve hour days in the sun, and a balcony seat to the entertainment stage (lit up in pink and blue in my pic) at our sister resort next door.
Though we couldn't really see the singers and dancers, you can clearly see the theatre was packed, and the acoustics of the music flowing over was fine.
Yep, what can I say... an Aruban Michael Jackson with backup singer/dancers doesn't get much more upbeat than that!

My meaningful tradition. TAKEN: APRIL 2025 Palm Beach, Aruba |
As I celebrated my 29th birthday (for the 31st time) I would have been remiss, if I didn't pack one of my treasured glasses, so that on my day, I could celebrate and have a drink with my Dad.
For those new to reading, I have been collecting the Petro-Canada vintage Olympic glasses (as shown above) for the better part of twenty years. I have travelled about a radius of approximately 180 miles, and searched every thrift store, garage sale, and online buy and sell site to collect more than 220 of them.
When I was staging my photo shoot in the beach, I could spy people watching me. As I returned to our palapa, I had one lady ask me, 'are you going to drink that?'
Ï simply laughed and explained that whenever or where ever I travel, I pack one of these beauties in bubble wrap, so that my Dad travels with me in spirit. Suffice it to say, I think he would have loved absolutely everything about Aruba.
Now, I know there are some folks out there that may think the glass collecting obsession is silly, but it doesn't faze me.
Instead, if I could offer one vantage point of logic to their negativity it's that what they don’t know is, in the very minute I hold one of these new to me special treasures in my hand, I'm in a wonderful moment with my Dad.
Today, on the beach, I could hear his laughter as he rattled the ice cubes in his glass, signifying it was empty and that he was ready for a refill.
Keeping his memory alive is very meaningful to me... and there's nothing even remotely silly about that.

By mid-day tomorrow, I will be strolling on the white sand in Aruba (c) TripAdvisor |
Woohoo… Katie Lu is two!
And to celebrate her arrival into the world, she lit up all my socials, to a plethora of heart felt birthday wish across numerous platforms.
That said, I don’t like to think of my dogs as 'Facebook famous', but I will admit that they all have acquired their own hashtags and are never camera shy when duty calls.
Note: The word cookie may have been used to achieve her beautiful birthday portrait this morning. #yagottalaughaboutit
PS: A happy 63rd birthday goes out to my big bro
today as well.
PSS: Cheers to these two beauties having a great day!

Celebrating Jukebox's birthday and embracing the local Friday night music scene! (l-r: My Rockstar hubby, Goob, and Jukebox the birthday boy.) TAKEN: FEBRUARY 9th, 2024 |
So, once our family arrived, we embraced all birthday festivities neither my husband nor I got to celebrate when we were growing up.
Jukebox, as our only Aquarian, always gave everyone something to look forward to between New Years and Easter. And, this past year was no exception.
The boys landed at the house after dinner and we left in search of somewhere to dine. Both he and Goob chose the Mexican restaurant, and it didn't disappoint.
With both our guys heavily involved in the local music scene, a trip to The Griffin Pub and The Hall made for the perfect places for after dinner apéritifs - as well as excellent entertainment.
Both venue played versions of songs by The Band as requested by our boys for their dad, and at The Hall, Jukebox jumped on stage to play for a packed house.
When I look at the photos I am sharing, they show how genuinely close we are as a family, and truly reflect how we've raised them... To embrace that great fun is NEVER overrated.

The tomfoolery started as soon as they landed at the house. A great time was had by all!! TAKEN: FEBRUARY 9th, 2024 |
The next morning I posted the top photo of to my social media platforms.
It read:
What a night. Everything was perfect.
I sang with my boys and danced with my man.
Who says living in a small town is boring?
Never, ever, would any of us utter those words.
Happy belated birthday dinner celebration Jukebox.... Thanks for the memories.
We love you both very much.
Well, it’s that time of year again.
When after months of waiting, I arrive at my destination of choice to celebrate another trip around the sun.
This year has me nicely perched next to the ocean, in a luxury home we've rented, in the Bahamas.

Once again, I packed a #petrocanada glass so I could watch the sunset ...and have a drink with my Dad. TAKEN: APRIL 10th, 2024 |
Yesterday was an OK travel day. The airports are always hectic but we have learned to navigate them with a ton of off the cuff comedy and a boatload of patience. Afterall, I know where I am going to land, and I realize that in itself is a privilege most never get to experience.
As our taxi zipped along the highway next to the beautiful blue green ocean, I felt myself become overwhelmed with emotion. I found myself fighting back tears. Tears of joy.
Joy that we can afford to travel as we do, and joy at the best life I have been obviously blessed to be living.
In a nutshell, I will leave you with this. Life is short people. When in doubt, please always refer to Rhondi Rule #779:
Make sure you don't celebrate your 75th birthday.... by living the same year 75 times!
As the year comes to a close at midnight tonight, there is so much I am very thankful for. So much so, that I have no idea where to start.
What I will highlight is that our wee, four legged blondie/Oreo filling, simply stole the show (as well as at least a half dozen of my perfectly good slippers). And, that I can finally admit I have discovered a perfect work/life balance; solidifying the saying 'life is short' as my personal mantra.
Thanks for the memories 2023. They are truly respected and appreciated. I feel blessed that I have such great hope for an even better 2024.
All the best in the coming year everyone. Cheers to all, and thank you once again for reading.
~ Rhondi
PS: With the past year 99.9% in the rearview, as you reminisce with me electronically you can click links to journal offerings that you may have missed, or wish to revisit.
Most Memorable Moment (centre): The addition of the beautiful Katie Lulu, that arrived to her new home on January 31st, 2023. She has proven to be a much welcome thread to the newly reunited Oreo Gang and we love her very much. Thanks again @labradorables
(LINK TO RE-READ: NEVER, UNTIL NOW! )
January: The unexpected and shocking murder of my former coworker Ashley Milne (top left) in Collingwood. I have spent the year following this terrible and unnecessary tragedy in hopes her amazing spirit didn't die in vain. Please keep her and her young children in your thoughts and prayers.
(LINK TO RE-READ: A IS FOR ASHLEY)
February: With my sweet Puddin' passing in June of 2022, we thought for sure The Oreo Gang would be displaced for years. That said, with our addition of Katie, Family Furbaby Day was once again a great success.
(LINK TO RE-READ: OUR ANNUAL ADVENTURE)
March: After checking the Salvation Army Store in Gravenhurst for more than twenty years, I was ecstatic to find four more of my wonderful Petro Canada water glasses for the very first time. In a stinking blizzard no less!
April: I always look forward to my birthday trip and this year was no exception. We hit Vegas Baby! What do you do in Vegas if you have no desire to gamble? Guess you'll have to read to find out! (There are also other offering though my April A-Z posts.)

May: For the first time in more than a decade, I moved to the cottage for the summer. I set up a satellite office and only commuted to work Monday mornings for meetings. I kept telling my husband that we should have named Katie '649'... Because that pup definitely won the lottery.
June: A milestone anniversary had us hop a plane to Montego Bay for the weekend to celebrate. My dad's birthday the 9th and our anniversary the 11th it made for a great reason to getaway. Though we stayed in a much smaller resort hotel than we usually do, we had a great time.
(LINK TO RE_READ: FROM FEAR TO FEARLESS)
July: July was an amazing weather month. I worked for most of it sitting at my desk in a bathing suit. The only thing I enjoyed more was spending time with Goob in the water. You know, it doesn't matter how old they get, I just love having them around.
August: As reminisce about the year gone by, I think it had to be the 'year of the concert'. I think there were seven in total, with four being my country quartet. From a bucket list perspective, Chris Stapleton won that prize. Man, Budweiser Stage is a great venue.
(LINK TO RE-READ: MY COUNTRY MUSIC QUARTET)
September: Per the work plan, we added another layer to our estimating team, a new project coordinator. I began her training right the first week of September, so I moved home to have a shorter commute. Labour Day Monday (Lab + Our Day as the photo shows) was my last day living at the cottage full time. Made no matter, it was a really great month!
October: This nod goes to spending Canadian Thanksgiving week in Nashville. Boy, did we cram as much in as possible before returning home. The Mother Church of Country Music left me speechless, as did almost everything about this amazing city - including the Opry.

November: They say some of the best decisions you make are the ones you think about the least. Well, we bought another boat. A 20 foot Doral bowrider that gets delivered the first week of May (weather pending). Can't wait to load up the pups...

December: Well this month is crammed with memorable moments. It closed out another milestone year at work, had us spend valuable time with family and friends, and our home was filling with both birthday and holiday spirit. Not just the birthday on the 25th but the 5th, when Katie celebrated her very first birthday.
When the kids were growing up, there was never an abundance of extra cash lying around for me to get to celebrate my birthday. So, when the nest finally emptied, I decided that every year I would take a birthday trip.
The first couple were week long jaunts but then I discovered I could have a higher end experience for less if I crammed everything into a long weekend.
Below is a neat snapshot and snippet of the my born day adventures since 2015.
2015: A quaint cliff top resort in Samana, Dominican Republic
This Gran Bahia was an amazing experience but not a resort meant for those with mobility issues.
One of the main reason I selected it was to walk (daily) the "Bridge to Nowhere" seen below...as taken from my poolside deck chair.
Great food, Salsa dancing at night, and loved experiencing the beautiful Barcardi Island with friends.

Sayulita is a village on the Pacific coast backed by the Sierra Madre mountains, known for its beaches and strong surf.
For this bornday trip, we rented a house with an infinity pool and were joined by friends as well as Jukebox. To this day, my husband says it is still his favourite spot. I snapped this pic in the morning after hiking to Playa de Los Muertos.
In all of my adventures, this is the most time I spent in the ocean. Almost all day everyday. My son was the only one that really got the hand of surfing. I traded my surf board in for a boogie board mid week,
A great time was had by all!

By 6pm we had walked well over 24,000 steps. Highly recommend staying at Paris. We received 5 star service. Thanks Air Canada! TAKEN: APRIL 2023 |
Well, a killer Black Friday deal made my birthday trip decision a no brainer this year. With the intention of only ever going once, I landed in Las Vegas today.
For just over six hundred dollars each, a suite with an Eiffel Tower view overlooking the Bellagio fountains was the purchase, and for the second year in a row I have Air Canada to thanks for a crazy amazing birthday deal.
Landed about 2p.m. today and home Saturday evening about 10p.m., we have a fun fill trip planned.
Heading to TopGolf this afternoon, Cirque du Soleil Beatles ONE at the Mirage tomorrow night, renting a Slingshot to head to Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam Thursday, then Freemont Street for the day Friday.
Lots to talk about and some great pics to share the rest of the month for certain.
Another 'Happy Birthday Trip' but more importantly another passport stamp for yours truly.
Feeling very blessed, as life is good!

By the way, this shot took four cupcakes!! TAKEN: April 2, 2022 |
Today is the amazing Miya Maria’s first birthday and I can’t begin to express how much joy this little rascal has brought to us and everyone she meets around her.
I knew I would be away to celebrate with her in person, so I planned a little party and photoshoot before we left. Excited at the thought, I told my husband what I wanted to do. As expected, he rolled his eyes, told me I was crazy, then drove me all about town to shop for props.
My first stop, Dollarama. I immediately made a beeline for the party section. As I perused the plethora of beautiful birthday hats that man with the ever-rolling eyes whom refused to stay in the car piped up with, "you know, she’s not going to keep that stupid thing on her head.” Knowing he was right, I made a second purchase of the headband you see here.
Next stop, Dollar Tree. For better candles and the hope for a nicer hat. No hat but I scored the candles for a buck then headed to Wal-Mart in search of the perfect cupcake. Only packages of twelve mini ones there, and my driver and I agreed we did not need to eat the leftovers. Grabbed what else was needed and back to the car we went.
Open the hatch and there you have it. Miya had shredded the
hat, ripped apart three of the four headbands (which now simply read APPY
RTHDAY) and the candles were missing. All I could do was carry on my quest. All
my husband could do was laugh!
Not to take my eye off the ball, into the grocery store I went and headed for the bakery. What the hell, they wanted $1.99 for one stinkin’ cupcake?
Again the man with the ever-rolling eyes who officially named it Let’s Laugh At Rhondi Day chimed in yet again, “there is no way she is going to do this thing in one cupcake.”
Dang, he was right again. So this time I rolled my eyes and bought a pack of four.
There really is no handbook for what stupidity looks like. But on that day, this quest officially deserved to post my picture next to the word in the dictionary.
Over six attempts, with three dogs, four cupcakes and one headband left I did it. Not proud of the journey but happy with the result.
Please join me in wishing the beautiful Miya a Happy Her-Day. We celebrate her today as she was the perfect gift I gave myself last year at this time.
You see, on this day last year, she was MIYA BIRTHDAY PRESENT!
...Thanks again for reading.
Celebrating my 2018 birthday long weekend on the shores of South Beach, Miami. TAKEN: APRIL 2018 |
For the first time since November of 2019 and our memorable hiking of El Faro in Mazatlán Sinaloa, it is official: we are leaving on a jet plane this week.
With mandatory masking having
ended in Ontario on Monday March 21st, and testing for fully
vaccinated travelers gone April 1st, I am excited to report that I booked us on a last-minute
five-day road trip down through the Florida Keys (flying in and out of Miami via Air Canada).
This trek has us renting a car and heading to the southernmost point in the United States, with the radio cranked and a vacation schedule packed tighter than the butt implants in Kim Kardashian's ass!
With the countdown on, I’m not sure what to expect heading into the States. Not wanting to open dialogue here about the last two years and how it was mandated or managed, I think I am just grateful that I can embrace my ingrained wanderlust again and spend my upcoming milestone birthday doing something we both love; soaking up some much needed Vitamin D.
So much has changed since we last travelled, most importantly my husband health journey.
I'll be honest, for the last number of months we talked of
several different locations in hopes we could travel in April, but access to great healthcare in close proximity
to where we were staying was how it was finally decided to rent a car and drive down to Key West and back to Miami.
Though we don't expect anything bad to happen, based on my research, I think we will be in good shape should we need it and getting either of us back to Canada should be much easier logistically.
Am I nervous? Hell ya!! But our outlook is that this is going to be great fun, and something else we can check off our bucket list.
First up, an oceanfront room is Islamorada, then day two has us doing a jet ski tour around Key West. After that, we are off on foot like we were in New Orleans for French QuarterFest.
As I'm sure you've all heard, it's always five o'clock somewhere in Margaritaville but for these five fun filled days, neither if us will be watching a clock.
Not to worry... We promise we will be very CAREFUL.
