T IS FOR TOMFOOLERY
Celebrating Jukebox's birthday and embracing the local Friday night music scene! (l-r: My Rockstar hubby, Goob, and Jukebox the birthday boy.) TAKEN: FEBRUARY 9th, 2024 |
So, once our family arrived, we embraced all birthday festivities neither my husband nor I got to celebrate when we were growing up.
Jukebox, as our only Aquarian, always gave everyone something to look forward to between New Years and Easter. And, this past year was no exception.
The boys landed at the house after dinner and we left in search of somewhere to dine. Both he and Goob chose the Mexican restaurant, and it didn't disappoint.
With both our guys heavily involved in the local music scene, a trip to The Griffin Pub and The Hall made for the perfect places for after dinner apƩritifs - as well as excellent entertainment.
Both venue played versions of songs by The Band as requested by our boys for their dad, and at The Hall, Jukebox jumped on stage to play for a packed house.
When I look at the photos I am sharing, they show how genuinely close we are as a family, and truly reflect how we've raised them... To embrace that great fun is NEVER overrated.
The tomfoolery started as soon as they landed at the house. A great time was had by all!! TAKEN: FEBRUARY 9th, 2024 |
The next morning I posted the top photo of to my social media platforms.
It read:
What a night. Everything was perfect.
I sang with my boys and danced with my man.
Who says living in a small town is boring?
Never, ever, would any of us utter those words.
Happy belated birthday dinner celebration Jukebox.... Thanks for the memories.
We love you both very much.

A IS FOR ADVENTURE
Today marks the start of my eleventh April A-Z Challenge.
Whether you're a regular reader or not, I can assure you that this month in particular always turns into a bit of a roller coaster ride for me. You know, a real writing adventure per se!
My buddy Dusty and I having a sunny winter snowbank adventure of our own. TAKEN: EARLY 1980's (photo credit to my late mom) |
From a very young age, I have always embraced writing. As I look back, I believe that part of me feels it was understanding the stages of the creative process itself that had me smitten from the start.
The thought preparation, development, cultivation, the editing, and finally the implementation. With my implementation now being when I hit my website publish button - not flipping the page of my lined scratch pad.
Then, when my kids left the nest, on that fateful night in October 2011, I registered for Blogger and the rest is history.
Writing for me is like the game of golf. Just because I like doing it, doesn't mean I am any good at it.
I read somewhere that adventure starts by standing still. In my case, for the last ten Aprils, adventure has always started with a blank page and the letter A.
Wish me luck - I am going to need it!!

OUTER BANKS PAW PATROL
Miya waiting patiently, as my Annie checks out who is on their way to the beach. TAKEN: OCTOBER 13th, 2022 |
Of the hundreds of photos I snapped, for so many reasons, the one I am sharing is a favourite.
Extremely candid and a tad dark and stormy, this is us embracing our last morning before heading toward the Chesapeake Bay crossing to Ocean City Maryland on our way back to Canada.
I have said it before, and I will say it again, that I don’t think we are conventional travelers. When neither of our sons could stay with the girls in October, we immediately planned something where the pups could come with, which presented its own challenges.
Not only is it difficult to find pet friendly hotels along the interstate where you need them, it is very
expensive to travel with four legged companions; but in the end, well worth it.
Yes, we rented a large oceanfront house for just us and the girls. It is what we could afford and we loved it. We would return in a heartbeat.
When I listen to some talk of
their experiences, it’s always in a tone of how much it cost, or how exclusive it
was. We don’t worry about either – simply ask ourselves one question – does it
work out best for us without breaking the bank?!
Mid life has taught us both that we are in competition with no one. We have no desire to play games and lead people to believe we are better than anyone else. Our personal philosophies are simple. We wake up every morning and try to be good people.
That said, embracing that mindset has had some take advantage of the both of us.
Though my husband is quick to point out the obvious, I generally choose to help where we can, in turn expecting respect. For me personally, it took me a lot of years to understand that in order to fully embrace my own self-worth, I needed to let go of those that didn’t value me.
As a hard working goal oriented person, some of those shifts in life have been the most wide awakening journeys of all.
...But that is definitely another post.

LEAPIN’ LIFE BALANCE!
In fairness to Miya, this was a bad throw by me... I didn't want my lunch break served with a side order of soggy! TAKEN: AUGUST 24th, 2022 |
In 2007 at fifteen years of age, when my beautiful yellow lab Toby crossed over the rainbow bridge, I promised myself I would take time to truly grieve his passing and not get a new pup during my extended time of mourning.
Not only did I have no desire to try and replace him, I honestly believe once you have a unique bond and connection like we did; that bond remains singular forever.
As a family, we were more than two years before we entertained another dog.
Now fast forward to the realization that our beloved Puddin’ had a rare form of cancer. Her long-term prognosis was grim, yet this time it wasn’t only me being left behind; it was our beautiful Annie.
They had been inseparable since we'd rescued her at five weeks of age. When she arrived she fit in the palm of my hand, was sickly and unable to eat, and Puddin' never left her side.
Worried Annie may die of a broken heart when Pud parted, we decided to smooth that transition by working with a CKC registered breeder to purchase another Labrador Retriever.
Miya Maria (seen above) was born on April 9th, 2021, and we picked her up on my father’s birthday in June. We were blessed to have Puddin’ live a year (less two days) from the one year anniversary of Miya joining our pack.
My point?
When I left my construction management job
last fall, I was truly blessed to have several opportunities present themselves - and
In the end, of the six formal offers I entertained, I had it down to two. One paid more money, the other offered me the option to work from my home office from Christmas Break to Easter without travel.
When I walked away from the money
and accepted the other offer in another sector, 48-hours before I was scheduled to start, my current
employer asked me back to the table with his counteroffer.
The most important item he presented was because I would report to him and he splits his time leading our teams, I would commute to the Muskoka office the set three days he's in. When he's working from our other company office, I would work from home for those two days.
It sealed the deal - and I have been grateful to get to balance my home office hours between the house and my desk at Orillia Lake.
I will report that the my current team's much younger than I expected, but I am excited to share that they look to my decades of experience and appreciate it. I love that I have entered the mentoring stage of my career after having so many really great mentors.
Also, I love the fact that those I am mentoring don't care to chase flying pigs into the lake, never beg for my lunch using drool, chase the squirrels I feed until they are ready to drop, nor smell like rotten ass on a rainy day from swimming so much.
...Truly making my work life/real life/doggie daycare life balance perfect!!

V IS FOR VICTORY
On our recent trip to Key West, we took in a popular tourist trap simply called “Robbie's” in Islamorda.
I had watched the destination being featured on several must-see
attractions on YouTube, so we planned to stop in on our way back to Miami. The experience
did NOT disappoint.
This school of more than a hundred tarpon linger for hours
at the hope of being hand fed. They actually rise out of the water to grab the
fish as it leaves your hand. My husband braved the activity, I watch and took
pictures; but had a blast just the same.
Now you’d think the tarpon would be the main attraction, but it was the ornery pelicans. Both bold and somewhat aggressive in nature, they not only steal the fish, but they also definitely steal the show.
The VICTORY
was theirs!
Here are a few pics
of our fun adventure.

C IS FOR CAREFUL
Celebrating my 2018 birthday long weekend on the shores of South Beach, Miami. TAKEN: APRIL 2018 |
For the first time since November of 2019 and our memorable hiking of El Faro in MazatlƔn Sinaloa, it is official: we are leaving on a jet plane this week.
With mandatory masking having
ended in Ontario on Monday March 21st, and testing for fully
vaccinated travelers gone April 1st, I am excited to report that I booked us on a last-minute
five-day road trip down through the Florida Keys (flying in and out of Miami via Air Canada).
This trek has us renting a car and heading to the southernmost point in the United States, with the radio cranked and a vacation schedule packed tighter than the butt implants in Kim Kardashian's ass!
With the countdown on, I’m not sure what to expect heading into the States. Not wanting to open dialogue here about the last two years and how it was mandated or managed, I think I am just grateful that I can embrace my ingrained wanderlust again and spend my upcoming milestone birthday doing something we both love; soaking up some much needed Vitamin D.
So much has changed since we last travelled, most importantly my husband health journey.
I'll be honest, for the last number of months we talked of
several different locations in hopes we could travel in April, but access to great healthcare in close proximity
to where we were staying was how it was finally decided to rent a car and drive down to Key West and back to Miami.
Though we don't expect anything bad to happen, based on my research, I think we will be in good shape should we need it and getting either of us back to Canada should be much easier logistically.
Am I nervous? Hell ya!! But our outlook is that this is going to be great fun, and something else we can check off our bucket list.
First up, an oceanfront room is Islamorada, then day two has us doing a jet ski tour around Key West. After that, we are off on foot like we were in New Orleans for French QuarterFest.
As I'm sure you've all heard, it's always five o'clock somewhere in Margaritaville but for these five fun filled days, neither if us will be watching a clock.
Not to worry... We promise we will be very CAREFUL.

A IS FOR AGAIN
What a difference 9 years makes. Can you tell I am out of practice taking a selfie? TAKEN: March 31, 2013 & April 1st, 2022 |
It’s hard to fathom that I started this wee electronic journal over ten years ago.
That day was Sunday November 20, 2011, and a grand total of thirty five people read my very first sentences stating: ‘Okay, so it’s apparent that I’ve set this thing up without a plan. Once again, the cart is before the horse.
Whatever, I’ll pat myself on the back, call it forward thinking and move on.’
With views over a million cumulatively over all platforms, the back story is that prior to deciding to write, I had been following two other writers of blogs. One was a gal I'd gone to high school with, the second a chicka whom truly inspired me, known as Cold Lake Cathy
It was her encouragement that gave me the confidence to take my first April A-Z Blogging Challenge
which began April 1st, 2013. Exactly nine years ago today.
From 2013-2020 I did my best to participate and post. But when April 2021 rolled around, my personal life as well as the entire world was in limbo and I just couldn’t motivate myself to participate.
Then, after leaving my job last fall to stay home and care for my husband, I went back through all my offerings and did a “from the archives” hybrid version.
I chose posts that resonated with me when I first wrote them and reposted each by backdating them into April 2021 using the exact day (stating the year) they originally appeared.
That lengthy exercise last fall, the reading of all offerings and choosing twenty six posts, made me realize that I
didn’t want to stop writing. It actually helped me understand how cathartic the process can be and how emotionally
attached I am to this silly little journal.
By the way, the photo above on the left is what I looked like the night before my very first A-Z post on April 1, 2013. The photo on the right, what I look like today.
These days, my coloured gray hair is thinner and much shorter. The dreaded waistline is regretfully wider, and the lifelines on my skin more apparent. Peeps, middle age is unquestionably my vibe.
The only thing similar is my overall optimism and a couple of important factoids that remain instilled since the start of my journey (as avid readers will relate):
A) The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.
B) When arguing with a stupid person, make sure they aren't doing the same thing.
C) Never push a loyal person to the point when they no longer care.
D) Always tell the truth, it gives you far less to remember.
E) Smile, it improves your face value.
F) Lastly, a great neighbour is definitely a found treasure. (For those reading, feel free to stop by the house next week and pick up dog poop. Free dog* to the first three that arrive!)
Chuckles aside, wish me luck peeps. Nine year later... I am at it AGAIN!
*Important caveat: The three dogs available upon 'great neighbour poop pick up day' are not mine - and most definitely shall be named later.

OUR HEALTHY HIATUS
Fun times on our last pre-lockdown vacation to MazatlƔn Mexico. Sad that (post op) travel will never be the same. BUT... We'll figure it out! TAKEN: DECEMBER 2, 2019 |
I began my work break the day
before my husband entered the hospital, and we mutually decided on day five after
his surgery, that I would not be returning to my then place of employment.
That said, not to throw baby out with
bathwater, I requested to take an addition three weeks of vacation time once we
got home. You know, in hopes my boss wouldn’t turn out to be the greedy turd my hubby warned me he was.
Alas, when the time ran out, I lost
in my true wager of hope. He won the lackluster coin toss fair and square, and as we expected I
officially left the job the Friday night before I was set to return the first Monday
in November.
Though you may be sensing this is
going to be a dark rant about a bad boss - it isn’t. He’s in the past and not the direction I’m
going. This electronic journal post is a good news story about my husband and me.
A good news story on how we spent
three life changing months, in very close proximity, essentially only in each
other’s company and we didn’t kill each other… Signifying will be a successful team
in retirement!
Now, for those of you that know
my husband, certain phrases will always come to mind. “Great guy, amazing friend,
gets along with everyone” top the list, and the list is long. The one thing I
will say, is that none of those people live with him.
Just as I’m sure people that know yours truly, wonder how my hubby puts up with me, I will caution once again… you don’t
live with us. I believe we work well because we have found a great balance.
At the end of the day, we have always worked hard on good communication as well as our overall friendship with each other. We married young and started our family younger than most. Yet, we were lucky to have found a rhythm that truly bonds the both of us.
Most importantly, the
rough patches are things we still discuss openly, they aren’t tucked away. As we both recognize, those times are all a part of how we have arrived at today.
Suffice to say, because of our looming circumstance over the last year, we’ve discussed our plans for retirement and what that may look like. I guess I can say that after the last three months, now we're just excited about how that eventual transition will happen.
Which brings me to my long story/short point:
How do you know it’s your time to retire? It’s when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it!
Stay tuned. After a year, I am finally writing again... and I promise to report back on what we decide!!

T IS FOR THREESOME
Fourth bestselling author of all time. We ALL can't be wrong! TAKEN: DECEMBER 6th, 2016 |
As you know, I love to read.
Nowadays, I do the majority of it online but there's really something special about being on vacation and actually holding onto a book. That said, I have taken the same author on vacation every year since the year before I got married.
I am pleased to report that the three (new to me) paperbacks that traveled from home, returned to my bookshelf at the cottage the following spring, and they did not disappoint.
