The three of us, in the air mid flight. Just look at my sister on the end. Adamant that she is unable to sleep on a plane! TAKEN: NOVEMBER 13th, 2024 |
When it comes to taking a vacation, coordinating great flight times has become an obsession of mine. Simply because we'd discovered more than a decade ago, arriving into YYZ in the middle of the night was a hard NO for my travel buddy hubby and I.
Now, when my sister decided she wanted to join us at a Mayan Riviera resort for a week, I warned her our our early departure intentions, which in turn secured a midday return flight.
Her big concern was, "...I can't sleep on a plane." (In her defense, we are far more seasoned travelers than she. We can fall asleep as soon as those booming jet engines are engaged for takeoff.)
Flash ahead to staying in a hotel close to the airport to be ready for a 5am Air Canada check-in. Her travel anxiety fired on all cylinders and she was up all night. When we woke on travel day morn, she was curled up in the TV room with a blanket.
Dealing with a lack of sleep, her next hurdle was to adjust to the fact that the Toronto airport is one of the most technically savvy in the world. Your cell phone and the airline app, have essentially replaced paper for a swift progression through customs.
I won't judge, but to paint a digital picture, my sister has a flip phone; one she is very proud of I might add.
So, we hooked her up with an older android phone we had, and as uncomfortable as she was good to go.
Pleased to report, that once we landed at our resort, she could call up on a VoIP app I had set up for her, making communication between our rooms worry free.
I know our expected overall resort experience will ultimately overwhelm her. Not because of her age but because my hubby and were on a mission. To have a great holiday, with lots of exercise, after a really shitty year to date.
On a final note. I don't know about you, but can't isn't a word I have ever embraced. My sister uses it a lot.
I suppose it is because my travel buddy hubby and I have always gravitated to the phrase 'we are going to die trying... and figure it out!'
